Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be helpful for patients experiencing chemo-related hot flashes, pain management, radiation-related dry mouth and fatigue. Disposable, stainless steel needles that are slightly thicker than a human hair are inserted into the skin at strategic points to cause a change in the physical functions of the body.

Oncology Massage

Research suggests that massage therapy can help with symptom management and stress-reduction for clients coping with cancer. Oncology massage can be focused on a specific problem area, such as the hands and feet, or can address the whole body to promote comfort and relaxation. Most clients undergoing active cancer treatment will receive modified, light-touch massage in consultation with their physician.

Gentle Styles of Massage and Energetic Touch

Some of our massage therapists specialize in these gentle techniques, which are offered on a limited basis according to the individual therapist’s schedule.

CranioSacral Therapy
CST is a gentle, hands-on method of touch therapy, which is performed with the client fully clothed. Using a soft touch about the weight of a nickel, CST practitioners release restrictions in the membranes around the central nervous system to improve its functioning.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Performed by a massage therapist with advanced certification, this style of massage is designed to help prevent the buildup of fluid in the tissues of the body. The technique, which is light and rhythmic, assists the lymphatic system by helping return lymph fluid back into the circulatory system.

Reiki
Reiki is a light touch, hands-on treatment that encourages the body to achieve mental, emotional, physical and spiritual balance.

Caregiver Services

Caring for someone with cancer is often stressful. We are here to help. Caregivers of registered Perlmutter Cancer Center patients are welcome to book massage therapy or acupuncture appointments with our practitioners. You can even schedule a treatment for yourself during your loved one’s visit to the cancer center.

Yoga

Yoga is a mind-body practice which has been proven to help people living with cancer to manage stress, build strength, and sleep more restfully. Our classes are designed with these principles in mind, but each class has a specific framework and unique approach. This program is partially funded with support from Jack Gordon. Advance registration one week before class is required.
