Welcome to Laura and Isaac Perlmutter Cancer at NYU Langone Medical Center, an NCI-designated cancer center. Caring for the whole person, not just the disease, our patients have access to state-of-the-art cancer therapies and clinical trials, as well as psychosocial support and integrative health services. Formerly known as NYU Cancer Institute, the team of experts at Perlmutter Cancer Center integrates patient care, research, education, and community outreach. This team approach is designed to help you manage many of the emotional and physical symptoms that may arise during treatment.

Before You Arrive
We recommend you contact your health insurance provider prior to your visit to review your benefits and any referral/pre-authorization requirements.
When calling to schedule an appointment, please have the following information ready:
- Patient's full name
- Patient's date of birth
- Best phone number to reach patient (home, work, or cell phone)
- Social Security number
- Home address (city, state, and zip code)
- Diagnosis (if already made)
- Name of referring physician
- Name of primary insurance and policy number
- Name of secondary insurance and policy number (if applicable)
- Name of the insured party
- When you schedule your appointment, a member of our staff will begin your pre-registration process. We will ask you several questions about yourself as well as important contact information and insurance details. At that time, we will also let you know whether the hospital and your physician participate with your plan.
- Several days before your appointment, you may get a call from one of our business office associates to review any questions you or we may have about your insurance.
Any previous test results that you can bring to the first visit are also helpful, including:
- Reports from care recently provided outside NYU Langone Medical Center and the Perlmutter Cancer Center
- Prior chest X-rays, CAT scans, mammography reports and films, PET scans, MRI scans, and bone scans that are available
- Pathology slides and reports
- Results of other recent tests, such as EKGs, blood tests, etc.
- A list of questions you have about your diagnosis, treatment options, or other issues
Arrival & Registration
At your first visit, please check in. At that time, you may be directed to the registration area. You will be asked to check in on every visit, both at the main entrance and usually in the area or floor where you are being seen. Additional registration appointments may be scheduled periodically to update your demographic and insurance information. At some of our locations these updates can be handled by our front desk staff. When you check in, please feel free to ask our staff if you require assistance with updating your address, referring physician or insurance and they will direct to the appropriate staff
Patients of Perlmutter Cancer Center may access care at a variety of NYU Langone Medical Center inpatient and outpatient settings.
These settings include visits to our inpatient facilities as well as visits to any one of our growing network of hospital-based outpatient centers and/or faculty group practice locations.
Note: NYU Hospitals Center and several of its hospital-based outpatient locations are considered Article 28 facilities. For these article 28 facilities, the billing system is different from what you may have experienced at other physician office practices. Rather than receiving a single bill for one visit, you may receive separate bills for the services provided by the hospital as well as the physician. We encourage you to contact your insurance company to understand your coverage for hospital and doctors’ visits.

Hospital charges include "technical fees," such as the cost of providing your care; use of the facility and support staff; imaging tests (x-ray, CT scan, MRI); procedures; treatment fees; infusion charges; lab fees; and/or supplies. Read more about hospital bills.
Financial Counselors and/or Business Office Associates can assist with questions about treatment authorization, physician visit referrals, alternative payment options and other insurance-related concerns.
Clinical trials are designed to answer questions about new ways to:
- Prevent cancer
- Treat cancer
- Find and diagnose cancer
- Manage symptoms of cancer or its treatment

If your treatment involves radiation therapy, you’ll benefit from some of the most advanced techniques available today, including Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Cone Beam/Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). Our Radiation Oncologists are at the forefront of research and have been leaders in developing and evaluating new methods that spare healthy tissue and deliver effective doses of radiation over a shorter period of time. Our Department of Radiation Oncology is accredited by the American College of Radiology and meets the highest standards of clinical treatment.
Chemotherapy drugs are administered orally, by infusion and/or by injection to help eradicate cancer cells wherever they may be in the body. While treatment options differ depending upon the stage, size and location of the tumor(s), treatments are provided by chemotherapy-certified nurses in treatment areas filled with natural light and designed for safety, comfort and privacy. Established and new investigational treatments are available at the Perlmutter Cancer Center. Patient televisions, wireless access and space for friends and family are available as well.
Perlmutter Cancer Center is equipped with a state-of-the art IV Infusion compounding pharmacy. Designed to assure sterility while providing a safe environment for handling chemotherapy drugs, it is staffed by a dedicated and highly trained team of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. In collaboration with our skilled doctors and nurses our pharmacy’s ongoing focus is on safety, quality, accuracy and efficiency. The team continues to offer their tireless support to patients and staff alike.
Our surgical oncologists are committed to providing the highest quality multi-disciplinary cancer care, applying the latest advances in clinical, translational and epidemiologic research. Working together with their expert peers allows for the highest degree of accuracy and precision and, when appropriate, using the most minimally invasive techniques.
While you may never meet them in person, pathologists are an integral and important part of your health care. Many of your physician’s decisions for your primary and specialized care will depend on the expertise and advice of a pathologist in some way. The Department of Pathology provides crucial patient-care support for NYU Langone Medical Center and, at the same time, is the largest basic science department in NYU School of Medicine. Our highly trained pathologists,located onsite, are responsible for the initial evaluation and the diagnosis of diseases; their advice is essential for subsequent treatment recommendations.
You can be assured that the laboratory at the Perlmutter Cancer Center will produce accurate and timely test results that will help your physician make important treatment decisions that is a critical part of your care. The laboratory at the Perlmutter Cancer Center is a New York State licensed Clinical Laboratory, with advanced technology and licensed clinical staff.
While you’re in our care, your blood may be drawn regularly on-site to help make important treatment and diagnostic decisions. Our skilled phlebotomy team will make you very comfortable during blood collection procedures using advanced methods in collecting specimens.
Our imaging services include screening and diagnostic mammogram; screening and diagnostic breast ultrasound; bone densitometry, stereotactic and ultrasound guided breast biopsy; needle localization; Positron Emission Tomography - Computed Tomography (PET/CT); Magnet Resonance Imaging (MRI); Breast MRI; nuclear medicine, and X-ray.
Perlmutter Cancer Center’s Breast Imaging facility received the American College of Radiology’s accreditation as a “Breast Imaging Center of Excellence” by achieving and maintaining high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility equipment, quality control and assurance programs. Our Diagnostic imaging facility received the American College of Radiology’s accreditation in MRI, Breast MRI and PET/CT.

Genetic counseling services at Perlmutter Cancer Center are available to patients with a personal and family history of cancerwho are under the care of one of our Cancer Center physicians. Our genetic counselors obtain a comprehensive medical and family history, assess hereditary risk factors, discuss options for genetic testing, and if applicable facilitate genetic testing. Please anticipate approximately 90 minutes for an initial consultation with our genetic counselors. Insurance coverage for genetic testing will be discussed prior to genetic testing being ordered. Genetic counselors are conveniently located at 221 Lexington Avenue at Laura Perlmutter Center for Women’s Imaging and at 240 East 38th Street at the NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center. Additional genetic counseling and clinical genetics services are also available at 145 East 32nd Street though NYU Langone Clinical Genetics Services. At Perlmutter Cancer Center we provide emotional and practical support services to enhance the quality of life for patients living with cancer, as well as their family members, loved ones and caregivers. Several staff members are bilingual, and interpreter services are available. Services include Social Work, Psychiatry, Nutrition Education, Artists-In-Residence Program and Individual and Group Support. The Integrative Health Program at Perlmutter Cancer Center is designed to help you cope with your diagnosis, relieve symptoms and reduce certain side effects related to cancer treatment. We offer acupuncture, massage therapy, and light touch therapies such as CranioSacral Massage, Lymphatic Massage, and Reiki, by appointment on a fee-for-service basis, on the 4th floor. Cancer can have significant short-term and long-term effects for you and your family. With the early introduction of a supportive oncology team approach, we aim to enhance your sense of well-being, improve quality of life; and address physical and emotional distress issues related to the primary diagnosis, side-effects of therapies or un-related clinical conditions. Supportive oncology teams work together with your clinical team in order to best help both patient and family feel better throughout the treatment process. Regardless of disease stage, we will help patients identify the appropriate service including: pain/symptom assessment /management, nutritional services, emotional counseling, education, advanced directives, goals of care and integrative, wellness and mind/body services. The Artist-in-Residence Program is a partnership between NYU Langone Medical Center and a national organization, The Creative Center: Arts for People with Cancer. This organization is dedicated to helping people with cancer retain their individuality and expand their sense of self through the arts. This program is offered to patients as a creative process that has a multitude of benefits, including: relief from anxiety; distraction from pain and gives patients the opportunity to engage in creative expression. This unique program was first introduced to NYU Langone Medical Center in 1999 and is a collaborative effort between the Perlmutter Cancer Center and the Department of Therapeutic Recreation, Child Life & Creative Arts Therapies.

NYU Langone’s medical librarians help patients, families, and caregivers find general information about their diagnosis and treatment. Questions that are specific to individual patients, such as “Why am I feeling sick?” or “What medications do I need?” should be addressed to your doctor or another member of your care team.
