Recommended Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines

There are three significant ways to increase the chance of finding a breast cancer early: regular breast self-examination, annual mammograms, and an annual examination by a healthcare provider. To learn how often these screenings are recommended, visit the American Cancer Society [2] Web site.

Breast cancer screening and prevention services are also available through programs funded by The Lynne Cohen Foundation for women who suspect they are at high risk of this disease, as well as those who want to learn their risk. Team members from a variety of disciplines collaborate to evaluate a woman's risk for breast cancer. The team includes specialists in medical oncology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology, and radiology, as well as nurse educators, genetic counselors, nutritionists, and social workers. A personalized program is tailor-made for each woman, who can help plan her screening and prevention program and possibly participate in clinical trials. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests are offered for women with a strong family history of breast cancer. The American Cancer Society now recommends MRI along with mammography for women with an increased risk of breast cancer.

Genetic Counseling Services

NYU Langone Medical Center also has a renowned Genetics Program [3] with expertise in caring for women who are concerned about a hereditary predisposition to breast and other cancers. We offer genetic counseling and testing to individuals whose personal and/or family history may indicate that they have an increased chance of developing breast cancer.
